As a brand new year approaches, many of us are making decisions on what to improve on in 2019. There are health and weight loss goals, career aspirations, and promises of positive mindsets…but what about improving the very first thing that people see when they look at you?
In this article, I’m going to give you some great and easy tips to help you to achieve flawless and healthy skin.
You don’t have to spend a ton of money, or change everything you are doing to achieve beautiful, healthy skin. There are lots of things that you might have tried, or might have given up on, so let’s take a minute to look at what is actually effective, and could be useful for years to come!

Always ALWAYS Take It All Off
Well, your makeup anyway 😉 If you take nothing else away from this post, take this!! Sleeping in your makeup can add years of age to your appearance. Which is, let’s face it, what we spend a lifetime trying to avoid!
There are times when I’m too exhausted to brush my teeth at the end of the day…I know. Gross. But i never ever leave my makeup on.
When you leave cosmetic products on all night (whether or not they are high quality), you are inviting both the product and dirt and debris to get lodged in your pores, which can easily happen when your body temperature rises at night, opening your pores wide.
Also, when you go to sleep without following a nightly skincare regimen, you aren’t giving your skin the required TLC that it needs.
So set aside some time, and wash the day away!
Hit Snooze A Time Or Two
Don’t be late to work. But this year, make sure to give yourself a good seven to eight hours of sleep per night.
It’s a relatively easy goal to set, and the extra sleep will definitely show up in your skin.
While sleeping, the skin goes into repair mode, rebuilding and recreating. A lack of shut-eye can cause the body to release hormones that may lead to breakouts. And no one wants the puffy bags under their eyes, either!
Over time, a consistent lack of sleep can cause the skin to have a dull, lifeless look, and accelerate the aging process because of lost time at night for regeneration of skin cells.
What Goes In WILL Come Out
Be aware this year of everything that you take into your body. This includes the free-radicals that you are taking in by hanging out in smoke-filled, or polluted environments.
As far as nutrition goes, water is an absolute necessity in your daily routine, so that all of the organs of the body (fun fact-the skin is the body’s largest organ), are functioning properly. Try to drink at minimum half of your body weight in ounces of water each day. It sounds like a lot, but it won’t feel like so much once you begin to reap the full-body benefits of being hydrated 😉
There are also certain medications (antibiotics, anti-depressants, birth control, etc) that can cause dryness, oiliness, and breakouts. Inquire while at the pharmacy or doctor’s office what the side effects are of your regular medications. Granted, the medication benefits might outweigh the effects on the skin, but your doctor may be able to switch meds, or change up the dosage a bit.
It is also greatly important to monitor how much junk you are taking in. I would love to incorporate chocolate into the main food groups, but unfortunately the refined sugar in many sweet products is a no-no for skin health.
You are what you eat. There’s no getting around that. Foods such as carrots, fish rich in fatty acids, broccoli, and walnuts are excellent for skin health.
Green tea is also a great option, as it has both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Another fun fact- green tea can also be used topically to treat puffiness and breakouts 🙂
Invest In A Personalized Skincare Regimen
So, just because your friend, who has never had a pimple in her life, is using St. Ives and coconut oil on her face and appears to have tapped into the fountain of youth, does NOT mean that you will have the same results! (and if you ARE that friend…the rest of us are green with envy! You go girl!)
Sometimes a personalized skincare routine is the key to turning your battle with skin issues around. There are so many products, and it is important to narrow your search down to the ones that will work best for your skin type.
A proper skin care routine that I would generally recommend to a client (minus any serious issues, which you would definitely need to take up with your dermatologist), would include:
I love Eminence Skincare because it’s all natural. They have products for every skin type, as well.
If you have dry skin, and have been unknowingly using a cleanser for combination/oily skin, you are one step away from alleviating the problem! The same goes for oily, problematic, sensitive, mature, etc.
Using the correct cleanser, toner, serums, and moisturizer can completely change the appearance and overall health of the skin.
Gone are the times of being beautifully bronze year round once you begin to discover those sneaky little brown spots that creep up on you little by little.
I treated many clients with hyper pigmentation in my practice. Sunscreen Sun Bum Original Moisturizing Sunscreen Lotion, SPF 30, 8 oz. Bottle, 1 Count, Broad Spectrum UVA/UVB Protection, Hypoallergenic, Paraben Free, Gluten Free is an absolute must. Though you might not see any sign of the damage the sun (or a tanning bed) causes for years…trust me, it’s usually there, deep in the dermis…waiting to emerge. And prevention is so much easier that correction in this case.
There are many moisturizers that contain sunscreen of some level. Opt for a product that says “broad spectrum”. You want to be sure that you are preventing both UVA and UVB rays. If possible, grab a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. This will help to ensure that you are covered, and give you some extra protection against burning and wrinkles.
Even riding in the car, or sitting within range of direct sunlight coming through a window can cause damage, so sunscreen is something that needs to be incorporated to help prevent early signs of aging.
Increase The Circulation
This is a semi-quick practice that can be added to your morning or evening shower without much effort or thought.
While in the shower, let the steam work on your pores for a few minutes, allowing them to open, and the skin to soften. Begin massaging the face in slow, circular, clockwise motions.
You can also use your fingers to grab small areas of the skin and lightly pinch to stimulate.
Two to five minutes of facial massage will work to increase blood flow to the facial tissue, resulting in glowy, youthful, radiant skin. Massaging in the shower also reduces the risk of clogging your pores, which could occur should you massage the face without the aid of steam and water.
Keep It Clean
Something that might ordinarily be overlooked, is the importance of skin care in between early morning and evening.
If you are working out in the middle of the day, and don’t plan to shower until evening…make sure to wash your face immediately after you finish exercising. There are ways to achieve this even on the go, if you are in a pinch, such as with cleansing facial wipes.
If you notice your skin getting slightly oily throughout the day, don’t ignore it, and don’t blot powder on top of it! The powder might cover the oil temporarily, but you are packing more product onto oil and grime. I recommend using oil blotting wipes specifically made to absorb the excess oil. These can be kept in your purse, or stashed away in an office drawer.
If you are noticing dry patches around your mouth, nose, or eyes during the day, or if you feel that your skin could use a pick-me-up, use a facial mist to bring some life back to your skin and soothe dry areas. There are many of these to choose from, and are very popular because of the convenience!
